Fluoroquinolones Trade names of product available in Pakistan
Class: Bactericidal,
Narrow Spectrum (Gram Positive)
Mechanism: Bind to the
‘A”’subunit of DNA gyrase (topoisomerase and prevent supercoiling of DNA, so
inhibits DNA synthesis.
Indications: Bacterial skin and
soft tissue infections, respiratory infection & cystitis.
Side effects: Causes the formation
of lesions in the joint/articular cartilage during rapid growth phases of
animals and decreased water consumption.
Notes:
They
are associated with CNS stimulation, and should be used with caution in
patients with known or suspected CNS disorders. It is not mostly used in
Dairy Cattle due to residual problem. Not used in horses because can cause
potential cartilage abnormalities in young horses.
