Aminoglycosides (Gentamicin,
Kanamicin, Amikacin, Streptomycin, Neomycin) With trade name
Class:
Bacteriocidal,
Broad Spectrum Mechansim: Irreversibly bind to the 30S ribosome
Indications: Infections caused by
susceptible pathogens, pneuomonias, urinary tract infections, endometritis, and
septicemias that are resistant to other antibiotics.
Antagonists: Amphotericin
B, Cephalosporins produce nephrotoxicity.
Side effects: Intestinal flora may
be disrupted, diarrhea may occur. Other includes intramuscular blockage (when used
with anaesthetic agents), nephrotoxicity and ototoxicity (oto=ear)
Notes: These are used in all species.
